utVenture-Learn.org:
Please
read before entering the community!
Technology,
personal computers, and the Internet have provided both the tools and
the access to knowledge on a scale never before imagined. All over the
world people are creating personal web pages and blogs in order to share
with others their interests and knowledge. E-mail, newsgroups, and listserves
have brought those with similar interests and hobbies together for discussions.
Online communities have come and gone by the thousands. But the resources,
information and knowledge remain, for the most part, disorganized.
Venture-Learn.org
was created with the mission to share knowledge in a collobrative environment,
providing the tools and resources to all who wish to use them. Online
courses and tutorials are provided at one location, categorized for easy
access. Academic resources, web search and web information evaluation
resources, technology and communication tools, resources for creating
web pages, blogs, and other alternatives for sharing information are available.
And several freely-available courses have been created or adapted especially
for this project as examples of what can be done
The virtual
learning community is designed as a true community where members are expected
to support and exhibit a sense of responsibility towards others. Requiring
only access to a computer, the community offers the opportunity to learn,
teach and develop a shared commitment in the search for wisdom and knowledge.
There are none of the usual barriers that have previously separated learners
such as: place of residence, race, gender, physical ability or age. Nor
will there be a division between teacher and learner. Members of the community
may be one or the other or both. There will be no prerequisites except
a desire to learn and a very basic knowledge of technology. The community
is designed to become self-sustaining as members volunteer for positions
in the governance of the community.
Because
knowledge also comes from exposure to other cultures and countries, travel
(both virtually and physically)is a major component of the Venture-Learn
community. In addition to resources on travel as an immersion into other
cultures, there are travel forums and cultural centers for sharing tips
and information.
The learning
community is divided into three levels:
1. the first level is designed for those new to the internet or
who are seeking basic technology skills and resources. This level includes
links to online government resources, health links, shopping, and news
sites. A selection of simple search tutorials and computer instructions
are available. Those at this level have access to communication with members
who have volunteered to assist them with technical questions.
2. the second level is designed for those who are more technically
proficient. This level offers links to pre-existing online courses and
tutorials, tools and software applications for creating various types
of web-based communication, academic and reference resources, travel forums
and travel links, discussion forums, and tools for creating web-based
courses.
3. the third level is the classroom where courses created by and
for members of the learning community are available. Members at all levels
have access to the other levels.
Now that
you understand the design and purpose of the learning community, pick
your level and have a great time!
