Historical Tour #1 - Downtown St Petersburg

The best way to see any city's historic places is by a walking tour. It 's difficult to estimate how long it will take you to complete this particular tour. If you do it all at once, it could take about three hours, so you may want to split it up into sections. With all the one way streets it is just too difficult to drive this tour.

Many of St. Petersburg's most famous landmarks are now gone (the price of economic development), so don't wait too long to see the historic remainders of this interesting city. As time passes more sites will become "historic", as is the case with the "old" Northeast are.

But before starting the tour, you ill want to learn something about the types of architecture you will be viewing. Here are some sites to help you:

The Urban Design & Historic Preservation Division of the City of St. Petersburg has a Notable Architects in St. Petersburg web page.

Dr. Tom Paradis of Northern Arizona University has created a web site of Architectural Styles of America..

Exploring Florida has a gallery of photos and floor plans of both the Florida Bungalow. and the Florida Cracker Homestead.

Florida Heritage has a Pathway to Florida Architecture & Landscape Design.

And Vitruvio has a database of famous architects.

So, let's get going, and head for the waterfront at Demens Landing. And for those who cannot take the walking tour, please join us for the virtual tour aboard our Historic Tour Streetcar!
