St. Petersburg Historical Tour #3 -

The Jungle Area

Saffron's Patio

One of the most interesting and beautiful areas (as well as one of the oldest) in St. Petersburg is the “Jungle” area.  Located on Boca Ciega Bay bordering Park St., it is the alleged landing place of Spanish explorer, Panfilo de Narvaez, on April 15, 1528.

The mansions in this area are among St, Petersburg’s most elegant.  Many are not visible from the road but some are, so the short trip down Park St. from Saffron’s Restaurant at 1700 Park St. to the Casa Coe Da Sol at 510 Park St is well worth taking.

But before starting the Jungle area tour, here are some links to background information:

* Florida of the Conquistador from The Floridians

* 16th Century Settlements from the Office of Cultural and Historical Programs

* The Spanish Conquistadors from Orlando-Florida.com

* Florida Maritime Heritage Trail - Native Florida Coastal Communities

* St Petersburg & Its People by Walter P. Fuller - electronic version of the book from the USF Library

* Addison Mizner

* Addison Mizner -  One of the Top 50 Most Important Floridians of the 20th Century

* Architecture Inspired by Spain

* Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER), National Park Service

If you are unable to make the physical trip to the Jungle area of St. Petersburg, you can still make the visit virtually by boarding our Historical Tour Streetcar.  At the end of the tour just click the back button of your browser to return to this page.
